Now we'll see some scales and ragas

Scales:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale_(music)

In music theory, a scale is a set of musical notes ordered by fundamental frequency or pitch. A scale ordered by increasing pitch is an ascending scale, and a scale ordered by decreasing pitch is a descending scale. or in a simple manner scale is an organized sequence of notes

Generally, there are seven notes in a scale, but it can be increased or decreased
i.e. seven natural notes C,D,E,F,G,A,B  (This is a Major Scale).

Which, we can play like this..

Well ! as you know to play any music, we have to use our hands (in general)  :-)

To help us place the correct finger on the correct note the fingers have given numbers.

First, we'll use left hand to play these notes/keys. Place fingers as given below:

  • Finger   1  (Thumb)    to     "C"   (सा )    note
  • Finger   2  (Index)    to     "D"   (रे )   note
  • Finger   3  (Middle)    to     "E"   (गा )   note
  • Finger   1  (Thumb)    to     "F"   (मा )   note
  • Finger   2  (Index)    to     "G"   (पा )   note
  • Finger   3  (Middle)    to     "A"   (धा )  note
  • Finger   4  (Ring)    to     "B"   (नि )   note
  • Finger   1  (Thumb)    to     "C"   (सा )   note
This is ascending order (आरोही क्रम) same fingers you can use for descending order (अवरोही क्रम).

Congrats!

You have learned your first scale... Keep Practicing

In the next blog, we'll continue this chapter and learn a few more scales.

Happy Learning 😇😇

Music 001_05/18

According to wikipedia.org

Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound organized in time. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempometer, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping; there are solely instrumental piecessolely vocal pieces (such as songs without instrumental accompaniment) and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "art of the Muses")

In simple Words Music has basically two parts.
  • Voice
  • Rhythm
  1. Voice stands for Seven Natural Voices : स, रे, ग, म, प, ध एवं नि
  2. Rhythm are Beats repeated at equal intervals i.e.  2/4, 3/4 & 4/4  etc.
So, this is the basic of  "THE MUSIC".

There are many genre and sub genres of music as per regions but we'll concentrate on two main kinds  :  INDIAN MUSIC & WESTERN MUSIC

Now the question in your mind must be: What is the difference between INDIAN MUSIC & WESTERN MUSIC ? Which MUSIC should I learn ? 😕😕

Don't worry! We'll concentrate upon the base of music which is always same, after that, choice is yours, you can learn any form

Basically there is no difference between Indian and Western music.... although Scales and Rhythms are different in both ....

😭😭 You are confusing me, first you said both are same and now you are telling they are different..😠😠

Well dear ! I'll try to explain.... in a simple manner

If I am living in USA, then how would I learn music, coz my language is English, and Voices are in Hindi.... So, here is the answer

7 Natural Voices : 7 शुद्ध स्वर  (Generally we all know about these 7 notes)

हिंदी  मे       :  स,   रे,   ग,   म,   प,   ध,  नि

In English  : C,   D,   E,   F,   G,   A   B

In Latin      : Do, re, mi, fa, sol,  la  ti

In this picture, it is a CHAIR in English Language, but in Hindi language it is कुर्सी. So, basically the difference is in language...  Similarly Voices are same, so, anybody can learn music as per their comfort... 😇😇

Example: राग भूपाली is a Indian raaga:
हिंदी      :  स,   रे,   ग,   प,   ध
English :  C,   D,  E,  G,  A
Latin     : Do, re, mi, sol, la, ti

Basically what we are learning here is a common theory, which you can apply anywhere in any type, any genre of music

I think now you know about Voices, So now we'll understand Scale.

What is scale ?

A scale / raaga  is a set of musical notes ordered by fundamental frequency or pitch. i.e. राग भूपाली, राग मालकौंस, राग यमन/ Chromatic Scale(12 Notes), Octatonic (8 Notes, used in jazz and modern classical music), Pentatonic Scale (5 Notes, common in folk music) etc.

How to play these musical notes on keyboard ( 🎹 ) ?

So Now you can easily understand, how to play seven Natural Notes (शुद्ध स्वर

Here I am giving you a link of a Virtual Piano, to practice

you can play ascending and descending of natural notes

Tip : Always practice with singing the notes, it'll give you more understanding of Music

Now we'll discuss the second part of music Rhythm

What is Rhythm ?

A strong, regular repeated pattern of movement or sound, The systematic arrangement of musical sounds, principally according to duration and periodical stress,

The “beat” of music; the regular pattern of long and short notes

Do practice and in next post we'll move further
